Facebook is adding a ‘Dislike’ Button

The ‘Dislike’ Button is finally coming

It looks like it’s finally here, the Dislike button for Facebook.  CEO Mark Zuckerberg has for many years said they wouldn’t add a “dislike” button, but in a Question and Answer session Tuesday, Zuckerberg let the world know they will soon be adding one.

“I think people have asked about the dislike button for many years. Today is a special day because today is the day I can say we’re working on it and shipping it,” said Zuckerberg.

Zuckerberg has in the past been against the idea of a “Dislike” button, but with sites like Youtube and Reddit allowing people to downvote/dislike a post, it seems about time that Facebook gave users the ability to show emotions in a negative light.

“What they really want is the ability to express empathy. Not every moment is a good moment,” Zuckerberg said.

The biggest issue is the idea of harassing someone by disliking their post.  Or even one of Facebook’s bigger fears, disliking a sponsored post.

“We don’t want to turn Facebook into a forum where people are voting up or down on people’s posts…That doesn’t seem like the kind of community that we want to create.  You don’t want to go through the process of sharing some moment that was important to you in your day and have someone downvote it.” Zuckerberg said.

Who knows – maybe you will only be able to “Dislike” someone who you are friends with and can only do it one time over a set period of time per person.  Or maybe you have to follow an organization to have the privilege of “disliking” their post.  Maybe this is a sneaky way to get advertisers more followers.  As the old motto goes, “any press is good press”.

Who knows yet – I guess we will have to wait and see what the Facebook team comes up with when they unveil the Dislike Button.
