Safe Fire Retardant

For decades, in the commercial and military sectors, textiles have been made flame-retardant using one of two means: chemistry that are harmful to the human body and the environment, or expensive fibers that are naturally flame-retardant. In the last ten years, a combination of price pressures, increased scientific scrutiny and government legislation have forced consumers to abandon these solutions in search of something new.

A company called Alexium is using cutting-edge, patented technology alongside decades of industry experience to create low-cost, durable, environmentally friendly, non-toxic flame retardant finishes for nearly any textile. They aim to develop solutions for customers in markets including eco-friendly flame retardant (FR) treatments on synthetic fabrics, development of FR polymer additives for non-textile applications, smart surface treatments for high performance materials, and multi-functional treatments for military applications.

Alexium has three main products for environmentally-friendly flame retardant chemistries: Alelxiflam, Alexiflam-NF, and Alexiflam-SYN. The first is for fabrics that are 100% polyester or cotton. The second is for cotton and wool-rich blends, and the third is for polyester, acrylic, nylon and synthetic-rich blends. None of these products melt or drip and they are durable as well as cost-effective. These fabrics are used mostly in industries including transportation, military, bedding, upholstery, contract, and workwear.
