Will Amazon be the Netflix of Podcasts?

By: Kassidy Coleman

Alright, let’s face it – Amazon will never be able to beat Netflix’s video streaming service and even if they won’t admit it, deep down they know it. That’s probably why they’re now trying to dominate a new industry: Podcasts.

You’ve probably heard about Audible, Amazon’s audiobook service. Well, now Amazon has released a new audio service called Channels, which soon might be considered the Netflix of podcasts. But the real question is are there enough podcast lovers that want to pay each month to access the service?

Amazon must have seen one fatal flaw in Apple’s selection of podcasts – there are simply too many, and seriously, not all of them are the best. Channels will feature original series “digital short-form audio” from an award-winning team. Yup, that’s right, they aren’t calling them podcasts, they are calling them “digital short-form audio.” Most likely they have opted to not call them podcasts, because most people know that if they want podcasts they can just go to Apple for free.

final podcast artAudible’s SVP, Eric Nuzum, told Bloomberg, “I’ve heard customers refer to podcasting as a flea market, where you’ll find some treasures, and it’s surrounded by a lot of junk. You have to be in the mood to sort through the junk to find the treasure, and people don’t want to do that all the time.”

Currently, Channels only has six shows, but forty are expected to pop up by the end of the year. If you already have an Audible membership, which is $14.95 a month, then you don’t have to pay any additional fees to access Channels. For anyone else, it will be $4.95 a month.
